Sunday as a Travel Nurse
This week was a little different on the travel nurse front.
A little history first. Everywhere I have been has similar dynamics of staff. There are the hard workers, the not-so-hard workers, the people that are always "doing something else" and well a ton of other kinds of staff. I joke that there are the same "people" everywhere. Meaning, there are similar personalities and work ethics at each place I work....Finding these people is always exciting, especially when I identify who they are most like from past hospital homes.
This week....
No longer following someone around and seeing how they work, I got to work on my own and show my stuff...HA! Well, I got to be the nurse I like being. Patients regardless of where I am are important to me. I don't care how much money you make, kind of car you drive, color of your skin, nothing. Only what I can do to make whatever brought you to me better, that is what I care about. Patients, people!
I met the "I am awesome and hate everyone" Doctor this week. Said MD was friendly at introducing himself to me, although that is where the niceties stopped. Believing he is above any task made my shift a little more frustrating than normal and very stressful. Coming into other patient rooms to tell me that the patient he just left needs something became the normal events of the morning. Finally after interrupting me again, I said "I can do that but so can YOU." Apparently that wasn't the best thing to say. Oh well! Get down off your high horse!!!! In health care we take care of people...Doctors, nurses, techs! We all are capable of getting a blanket, walking someone to the rest room, turning off alarms....sadly many people think that they are above this....YOU'RE NOT!!! Work as a team, get better results!
Positive side this week I met a tech (another term for nurse's aid, CNA, PCT) who is outstanding. Both task oriented and personable she was awesome. Helping with any and everything she made my two shifts with her smooth and almost seamless. Tech with a heart is what I would call her.
I worked three, have two off and two on again. Resting up today and getting back to it tomorrow I want to go in every day with the thought "I make a difference." Smiles are contagious, so are positive attitudes. I believe in the goodness of people and I hope I get to be part of bringing smiles to my patients this week.
You are awesome!
