Don't touch your Face

While dining out with my love, my husband the other night enjoying some sushi and sake I was very upset at over-hearing the table next to us conversation. It was three young women ( no older than late 20's) talking about the need for plastic surgery and such on their faces. two of the three women had WAY too much makeup on and looked like a poor attempt at being the next Kardashian while the other was more natural in appearance and had very striking features.
Andy and I continued with our meal and the craziness continued. One of the young woman was talking about how she had already had a nose job (obvious), botox, restalin, and lip collagen injections. Trying to convince the natural woman that she needed such procedures as well. Sadly you could see on her face that she was having an inner dialogue of whether or not she should complete such insanity at such an age. Well, I hope that is what was going through her head.
As this madness continued further I got very sad and upset. Woman are constantly made to seem superficial and silly. Looking for the latest fancy purse and modern twist on a classic look. Then we go out with our "friends" and we are told you are not beautiful enough. No, you need to inject toxins and poison into your face, shave down your nose and fatten up your lips, cake on make up, throw on some tight clothes and high heels....then you will be desirable.
I started to have an inner conflict myself. Do I say something? Do I go and tell the woman that she is beautiful the way she is? Call her friends out and tell them how plastic and fake they look? My love, my husband and I discussed the options we had  in order to not hurt anyone's feelings and nothing seemed right....Damn! I wish I would have run into her in the bathroom or something. I woke up this morning thinking that about that woman and many like her. Being swayed by insecure and weaker women to become something that they may not. I am sad for her. Sad for any woman with the same conflict.
I am not saying that plastic surgery is silly. But somethings are ridiculous. It is an art. A child that is badly injured, a person in a terrible accident, a cancer survivor, massive weight loss, all of such procedures can't be completed by a normal MD. It takes a skill. If you want to go and have needles shoved into your nerves and fat  lumped on your face, do it....It is your choice, your money, but make sure it isn't someone else telling you to do it.
I struggle withe being happy with my looks every day...I wouldn't change it at that cost. Aging is something we earn and get to wear as a badge of honor. Why are we so afraid of what is natural?

  1. HA! Agreed! When I first saw the title of this entry I thought it would be about something more mundane like the temptation to pick facial zits. 60 years old and STILL dealing with adult acne. Yikes!
