Thank you Andy and Cesar
Bishop has been a long time part of both Andy and my lives. Andy has had him and worked with him since he was a little tiny puppy. Over those years he has instilled some amazing skills and behaviors in the dog. When we decided to foster dogs a couple years ago it was a challenge for me...I didn't much about dogs other than the rules that were in place for Mr. B. Like many adventures that we have taken together it was a HUGE learning process for everyone in the family.
Andy suggested that I read the Cesar Milan books and watch the "dog whisperer" on TV so that I could see that dogs are simple. There shouldn't be such confusion and complicated training techniques. Dogs need leadership and set boundaries, it really is that simple.
After a few both great and challenging foster dogs we fell in love with Bomber, who quickly settled into our family. The combination of Bishop and Bomber was something that really changed our lives. Bishop an easily excited, stubborn Beagle is a dog that challenges us. Give him an inch and he takes a mile. Where as Bomber is calm and just wants to be near you. The two force us to reinforce the simple rules that we have learned about dogs.
This morning I was walking our two pups when our little pack came across a large black dog hanging out in the street. This dog walked right up to Bishop and Bomber and said hello. Instead of taunting the dog and trying to get it excited, I squatted down and let her sniff me and the pups. After that she stayed right next to us and allowed me to put a leash on her. She had no tags, but a collar and a simple bracelet from a dog grooming spa. She walked with us back to our home and I started the hunt for her owner. It was pretty simple. I called a local animal hospital and they offered to scan her for a micro-chip. The groomers bracelet was so faded that it made it difficult to see the contact number, I tried it anyway and was successful. The woman on the other line said she would call the owner. A couple minutes later I met the owner near our homes and she was so grateful that I had helped her dog.
The whole time I was with this dog, Kobe I remembered to stay calm and to be in control. I felt so proud that I was able to handle both of our dogs as well as this other dog. I lead the dog back to her owner with no anxiety, no frustration....Truly I wanted to help.
So thank you Andy for always helping me become a leader to our pups. It is something that I struggle with all the time but because of you today I was able to help a lost old pup.
Andy quotes this all the time "birds fly, fish swim, dogs walk." It is that simple. That is their job. It is that simple.
